I met Al as a rank beginning bridge player. Over several years our paths crossed at many tables. He was always a gracious and polite. As a competitor, he was lethal and superb, but unfailingly exhibited great sportsmanship. He never tried to intimidate the new player, but rather, politely asked if we would accept a gentle bridge tip. One memorable suggestion was to be prudent when doubling opponents and never double a contract when Al was the declarer. How right he was.
His brightly colored shirts and pleasant presence will be missed. Godspeed, Al.
