Julia Ann Barnes

Julia Ann Barnes (Judy), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the age of 87 in her home at Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn, Virginia. Born in Cumberland, MD, she was the only child of Lawrence and Beatrice. She graduated from Catholic Girls Central High School but was able to participate as a cheerleader for LaSalle High School where she was the captain for both her Junior and Senior years. Her other passion growing up was girls’ softball where she and her team won the “Pigtail League” Championship multiple times at the ball field at the bottom of her street. She was so proud to be their “Championship Pitcher.” After high school, Judy started work at S.T. Little’s jewelry store, a landmark in downtown Cumberland. While working, she attended Catherman’s Business School at night for 2 years. After 4 ½ years at S.T. Little’s, she transitioned to work for a prominent primary care physician in Cumberland before she met and married her husband, John Andrew Barnes. Throughout her 60-year marriage, Judy would travel with John and live in several places including Norfolk, VA, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Fairfax, VA, and Rochester, NY before settling down in Springfield, VA to raise their family. You can take the girl out of the small town, but you cannot take the small town out of the girl. No matter where she would live during the rest of her life, her heart would always be in her quaint, picturesque piece of small-town Americana, Cumberland, MD. Judy and John raised their family in Springfield, VA until Jennifer left for college. At which time they moved to Lake of the Woods outside of Fredericksburg, VA where they would live for over 30 years. During their time in Spotsylvania County, Judy served on the Dogwood Village Nursing Home Commission where her mother finished her life. Judy took great pride in all the Commission was able to accomplish on behalf of the residents during her 8 year tenure. Last year they moved to Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn, VA to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Judy is survived by her loving husband John, her son John (Sharon), daughter Jennifer (Pete), grandchildren Kaitlin (Jack), Ryan (Erin), Kyle, Joey, Caroline, Nicholas, and Meghan, and great grandson Gregory. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 21371 St. Theresa Lane, Ashburn, VA 20147 at 10:40 AM on Thursday, October 24, 2024. She will be buried during a private family ceremony, on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Laurel Hill Memorial Park in Fredericksburg, VA.
