Today (May 8), I learned with sadness that Richard passed away. My heartfelt sympathy to Katherine, Patrick and Anna, Matthew and Jane. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Hennie Deboeck-De Zutter, former CGIAR and World Bank colleague.

Unfortunately, Glenys and I will not be able to attend the funeral on Saturday, Cinco de Mayo, to pay our last respects to "Rich",as he was familiarly known to his friends.However, our love, prayers and our most sincere thoughts are with Kate, Patrick and Anna, Matthew and Jane, the Clifford extended family and friends in their hour of grief. Our fond memories of Rich and the good times we had together, at CIMMYT in Mexico in the 1980s,will be with us for ever and the bond of friendship will be everlasting. We were privileged to be friends of Rich who lived a full life and gave his all to improving the lives of others in the developing world who were less privileged. Our last and very happy memories of Rich was as a proud father at Patrick's wedding, which we so much enjoyed in the company of the extended Clifford family and friends.The following verse aptly captures our memories of Rich:
He cared, more than others thought wise

The Jewell family in Australia send all their love to Kate, Patrick, Matthew and Jane. We remember Rich as an intelligent, witty, kind and loving husband and father. We share many special memories of our days together in Mexico.

Richard was a great person to work with. He was friend and guide and his soft spoken mannerism still lingers in my memory. It is said GOD likes good people and he calls them to his heaven. I am sure Richard would be one of the few good people in Heaven.
A wonderful man, husband, father and friend, I will remember Rich for his kind and generous spirit and for the creative and adventurous life he created with Kate and his children. Though way too short, his was a life well lived.
The finest and most decent of colleagues. Will be greatly missed by me and several others who had the privilege of associating with him.
