Bobby was the best friend any person could ever have; he was the brother I never had. He gave selflessly of himself, had a wonderfully quirky sense of humor, and was distinctly unimpressed, by wealth, fame, prestige or power. Not for him were those illusory and ephemeral things. To him, the most important thing was giving, not taking, connecting with his friends, and he gave the most important gift of all: Love.
If there is one story that defines him, it is this: In the 1970s, he decided to take a Tom Sawyer adventure. He sold everything he owned, went to Minnesota and purchased a canoe and provisions, then plopped that little boat in the headwaters of the Mississippi River and floated all the way to New Orleans! Can any of us ever imagine doing something like that?
So, float on, my brother, and when you get to Heaven's version of New Orleans, link up with all our departed classmates and family and party on. I'll be thinking of you!
My deepest condolences to Pam and Gary.
