Joan Winifred Reinertson

July 8, 1928 - August 26, 2018

Joan Winifred Reinertson passed away peacefully Sunday, August 26, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones. Joan (Joie) was born and raised in Cambridge Minnesota. Her parents were Olga and Alvin Wahl, who owned Wahl's Jewelry and Gift store where Joie worked after school and summers. Joie graduated from St. Olaf College, where she thrived academically and met the most important person in her life who she married in 1951; John E. Reinertson. Thus began a life-long adventure of living and raising 5 children abroad, learning to speak many languages, hosting Diplomatic events, skiing down the highest mountains in Austria, taking the hottest saunas in Finland and swimming in the coldest waters of Scandinavia. Returning to the States, Joie worked for an Environmental Organization and on weekends helped her husband finish a stone cabin they began building when John retired. Upon its completion, they moved permanently to their new home on Massanutten Mountain in Luray, with a vista of the Shenandoah that brought her peace and serenity. Family gatherings meant everything to her and the cabin became the place where recipes of life, a simpler existence, and Norwegian traditions were shared with her children and grandchildren. Joie leaves a legacy of being a loving person, a caring listener and having a smile that will continue to radiate around the world because anyone who met her will never forget her smile. Joie leaves behind her husband of 67 years, her 5 children, her 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren all of whom she adored. A memorial service to celebrate Joie's life will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Leesburg on October 27th, 2018 at 2:00pm.
