Michael Francis Derby

March 2, 1961 - May 27, 2018

Michael Francis Derby, 57, of South Riding Virginia, formerly of Massena and Star Lake, New York died Sunday May 27th while in hospice care in Aldie, Virginia. He was surrounded by his wife, children, siblings and extended family. Mike was born on March 2, 1961 in Massena New York to Joseph P and Joanna K Derby. He is a 1979 graduate of Massena Central High School and a 1986 graduate of the State University of New York at Canton with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. Mike worked for CH2M Jacobs for over 30 years as a Resident Inspector. Mike is survived by his wife Cynthia, two step children William (Billy) Brown and Brooke Derby. He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Joanna Derby of Star Lake, New York. He is survived by his two brothers: Patrick of Mechanicsville, Virginia and Christopher of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and two sisters: Katie of Atkinson, New Hampshire and Stephanie Widzinski (Jim) of Round Hill, Virginia; four nieces Anna, Tori, Ally and Madeline; six nephews Zachary, Mitchell, Brian, Kolten, John and Nate; three aunts and many cousins. Mike’s long career with CH2M Hill had him moving to wherever the job took him. Mike lived in Cape May, New Jersey; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Suffolk, Virginia; Catlett, Virginia; and Sterling, Virginia before settling in South Riding, Virginia. Mike had many hobbies and interests that included woodworking, rebuilding motorcycles and outboard motors, collecting Fiestaware, antiques and any memorabilia that had the DERBY name on it. However, Mike’s most expensive hobby was collecting Porches; he had three of them. Mike and Cindy recently purchased a house in Star Lake with the dream to retire there. Mike didn’t like the water and never swam but he loved to have a few cold beers on the raft hanging out on the lake. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Friday June 1st from 2 to 4 pm at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s name can be sent to the Star Lake Volunteer Fire Department in Star Lake, New York.
