Wilbur Harold Smith (Smitty), 95 years old, of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at his home surrounded by loved ones. Born January 31, 1927, he was the son of William Hartwell and Lucie Lee Crantz. Smitt Read Obituary
Smitty and I met at Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC) when it was located at Shirley Highway (now known as I-395) and Edsall Road. We shared many tasks-he as the head man for ARC properties and I as the young Assistant Counsel for the company. When ARC became part of Susquehanna Corporation, Smitty was in charge again of the properties; together, we developed part of the Pine Ridge plant in Gainesvile, VA into an industrial subdivision and part of the ARC main site into an office park. We worked together when his church was building its campus next to the future site of the Fairfax County Parkway.
Smitty was the consummate gentleman at all times; he never seeing lost his temper or uttered a harsh word; that is quite an accomplishment for a man who faced so many unusual challenges in his professional life. As attested by his loving family, he was respected by all with whom he had contact. Deepest condolences to all the members of Smitty's extensive and loving family.
