I regret not hearing sooner, but sadden to hear the news about Doc Smith’s passing. He tutored me in math and was just an overall great guy! It was a riot to hear Doc Smith and my mother, Kitty, banter back and forth! RIP Doc Smith

Mr. Smith and my father were good friends, and he would stop by our house frequently. He was also my math teacher, and a great one at that.
Mr. Smith had a wonderful, quick, and wry sense of humor, and I remember one example quite vividly. At some point, my dad decided to award Mr. Smith with an honorary degree, so he was always known as Dr. Smith in our house. For a while, my father worked summers managing the pool at Goose Creek Country Club, and Mr. Smith would sometimes stop by. And, of course, my dad would introduce him as Dr. Smith. One afternoon, a pool patron sought out “Dr.” Smith to ask for medical advice. Without pause and with a straight face, Mr. Smith suggested she take two aspirin and call him in the morning. He was one-of-a-kind.
Even though it has been a while since I spoke with Mr. Smith, we exchanged Christmas cards every year. He will be missed, especially at Christmas.
Mr Smith was very person . It was a pleasure to meeting him at Loudoun County High School. My prayers with the family

I first met Mr. Smith in algebra class almost 60 years ago, and knew him as a teacher, yearbook advisor, and one of the most wonderful persons I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. He was a gentle, friendly, and influential presence in many students’ lives, including mine. His was truly a life well lived.
In high school, when I would attend sports at the school, whatever money I would give him at the gate for admission he would place into the register and then count it all back to me like he was making change. So, in sophomoric gratitude I prolifically spread a rumor that Mr. Smith had a black belt in Karate. He was a wonderful man and genuine educator.

Alan was my cousin and a born jokester. In his younger days he would have a friend draw cartoons of things going on in my Mom's life and also of other relatives and send them anonymously through the mail. One sent to my Mom was of a midwife traveling to see her on her mule. Of course, we knew who had sent them, and they were always a topic of great amusement.
I enjoyed sitting with Alan on the porch of the old farmhouse, when he would come and stay several weeks in the summers. He had such a dry sense of humor and in talking about many different subjects, he would suddenly throw in a very funny remark about someone or something. I really miss him and those days gone by. May he rest in peace.

Smitty was my algebra teacher in the 80’s. The running joke between us (and the rest of the class) was why I didn’t have my homework for the day. I credit him for helping me make it through high school mathematics. His compassion, humor and caring nature had a large part to play in the man I am today. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Rest easy Mr. Smith, I’ll get that homework to you when I get up there.

My condolences to Alan’s family. May he rest in peace and eternal light.
Mr. Smith was my home room teacher in 1991 and my math teacher in 1992. I always had fond memories of Mr. Smith. He was a generous man and always let me into the football and basketball games free of charge because I spent the time to talk with him and get to know him. Truly a special man I’ll always remember his kindness.
