Alfred M. Zuck's Obituary
Alfred M. Zuck, 89, passed away on August 25, 2024 at Ashby Ponds, Ashburn, VA. Born on August 27, 1934, he was the son of Walter N. Zuck and Mary M. Zuck.
Alfred grew up in East Petersburg PA, graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1957, Magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then received a Master's degree, with distinction, from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University in public administration in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he began his distinguished 25-year career at the U.S. Department of Labor working his way up to Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management. During a brief period in 1981, he was selected as the Acting Secretary of Labor. After retiring from Labor in 1983, he became Executive Director, The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration until 1996. Alfred completed his working career as Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at the American University in 2004.
He was also the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Presidential Distinguished Executive Rank Award; the Distinguished Career Service Award; and the William A. Jump Memorial Award.
Alfred enjoyed the company of family and friends, traveling to different countries, 77 in total, and working in his vegetable garden.
Alfred was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Erla (Zuck) Resnick, Vera (Zuck) Johnson, and brother Ray Zuck. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Geraldine C. Zuck of Ashburn, VA, daughter, Susan Z. Madden (husband James) of Ridgefield, WA, and son, David A. Zuck (wife Rebecca) of Richmond, VA, and three grandchildren, Nicole Zuck, Sara (Madden) Elletson, and Christian Madden.
