Andrew Fotinos. Technician Fotinos. But to us at the firehouse, he was simply “Blue” — a name he wore like a badge of honor.
He called us his “young bucks.” And no matter the age difference, he was our brother. We had his back, and he had ours — through thick and thin.
I had the privilege of running weekly shifts with this genuine, thoughtful, kindhearted man for years. Together we learned what it meant to serve a community. We sharpened our craft through the fire service — as a crew, as a brotherhood. We were one and today, we mourn the loss of our brother.
Blue wasn’t just a firehouse buddy. He was a mentor. A life coach. A steady voice of reason to me and to all of the younger guys at SVFC. When I listen to the stories and reflections from our crew, I realize the simple lessons he taught us — about integrity, responsibility, humor, and heart. Which helped shape us into the men we are today.
I find myself longing for those old Crew 4 days more than I ever expected. I never thought I’d miss waking up at 5:30 in the morning after a long night of shenanigans, hearing Blue huffing and puffing as he wrestled his woke up and sleeping gear into his bag while the rest of us tried to sleep in. At the time, it just felt like another early morning.
Now I realize — those were the good old days. The kind you don’t recognize while you’re living them. The kind you never get back.
Technician Fotinos, thank you for the lessons, the laughs, the brotherhood, and the example you set. We’ll carry it forward — just like you taught us to.
