Anna Disher's Obituary
Anna Miller Disher, 90, beloved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother passed away peacefully in Winchester, VA on July 29, 2023, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Anna was born in Winston- Salem, NC on October 10, 1932, to Gough and Queenora Miller. She married the love of her life, J.C. Disher, Jr. on December 28, 1950, and they were married until his passing in November of 2002. Anna graduated from Hanes High School, where she lettered in basketball and softball, was a majorette and was also selected city wide beauty queen of Winston-Salem for 1951. After graduation, they attended Elon College and Anna obtained her secretarial degree.
Between J.C.’s job with Proctor & Gamble and his service in the US Army, they were able to not only travel extensively but also lived in Germany, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. After retirement they visited Australia, Alaska and numerous other areas of the US and Canada. Anna loved sports, not only watching her beloved Washington Redskins but also playing golf and bowling into her early 80s. She served as President of Ladies 18 Holers at Chantilly National CC & President of ARFAX Women’s Golf. She was also active in the International Order of Job’s Daughters serving as Bethel Guardian of Bethel #65 of Falls Church.
Anna is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Disher Powers of Leesburg, VA and Joni Lynn Disher of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Christopher Powers of Leesburg, VA and three grandchildren, Amanda (Mandy) Powers her husband, Harris Spyrn of Reston, VA, Brady Harris Powers of Boca Raton, FL and Garrett Scott Cox of Goldsboro, NC. She is predeceased by her parents, and her two brothers, John Miller, and Roy Miller.
The family would like to thank her caregiver, Dianna Mason for the excellent care provided for the last seven years.
A memorial service was held to celebrate Anna's life on September 22, 2023 at 11 am in the Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury Chapel followed by a reception on site.
Inurnment will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 9 am at Arlington National Cemetery columbarium.
