ARTHUR STEVENSON LLOYD's Obituary
Born on November 16, 1944 in Markham VA, Arthur Stevenson Lloyd was named in honor of his mother’s father, Arthur Williams, and his father’s mother, Mary Stevenson Lloyd. From an early age he became known by the nickname Bumpsie and the nickname stuck throughout his life.
Arthur was raised in Middleburg, VA. He attended Banneker Elementary School and graduated from Douglas High School in 1963. He went on to graduate from Virginia State College in 1968 with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. It was at Virginia State that he became smitten and fell in love with a girl named Shirley Alfreda Amy from Laneview, VA. In 1969, they married and soon after took off on a cross-country drive to see the world. Later in their marriage, they were blessed with a son, Brian Keith Lloyd, who they loved dearly.
Art, as he was known by Shirley, was gifted with the ability to create, build upon or fix just about anything. After college, Arthur taught high school Industrial Arts for a number of years in Chesapeake and Loudoun counties. After gaining teaching experience, his desire to own his own business emerged. He established A&S Cleaning Services which he operated and used to create jobs for others for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 2010.
Bumpsie was a motorcycle enthusiast and founding member of the Sundowners, a motorcycle club. He and Shirley both owned motorcycles and enjoyed many years taking road trips together to see the country.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving and devoted father to his son Brian and wife Maria. He proudly participated in the activities of his three granddaughters, Bria, Rayna and Nya. He was Mama and Daddy to his two siblings, Swithern and Mildred (Richard) as well as one nephew, Swithern Jr. as he continued to carry on the traditions begun by their parents. Like his mother, he made and canned pickle during the summer and made delicious cakes and bread during the winter holidays. Like his father, he could always work out a fix for what needed fixing.
Bumpsie was the hub of communication with the wider family. He reached out and kept in touch with friends and relatives across the country and was the go-to source for family history. He worked extensively on documenting the history of the Lloyd and Williams families in pictures and family trees. He has left that body of work as a gift to the wider family so that knowledge of where we came from and how we’re connected will live on.
As a family, we will learn, in time, to cope with his loss but we will never forget him. He was a solid man and he was loved entirely.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday May 31, 2022 at 5:00PM at Leesburg Community Church, 835 Lee Ave. Leesburg, VA 20175.
