Brentwood Lockhard's Obituary
Brentwood Lockard, 85, passed away peacefully at his home, April 2, 2009, in Ashburn, Virginia after an extended battle with prostate cancer. He was previously a resident of Westminster, Md.
He was currently employed part time with CDS, as a demonstrator at Costco in Leesburg. He was a Pfc in the US Army and served in WWII. He retired from two full time careers prior to moving to Virginia in 2006. He was a foreman at Congoleum-Nairn Flooring for 40 years, retiring in 1986. He also retired in 2006 from a custodial position with the Westminster United Methodist Church after 43 years of service. He was an active member of the Mayberry Church of God as an adult Sunday School teacher, Elder and Trustee. Upon his leaving in 2006, he was given the honor of attaining Life Elder and Life Trustee status. Brentwood regularly volunteered for the soup kitchen at the Methodist Church and various other church and community projects.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jack Harding of Ashburn, a granddaughter, Coriann Harding of Colorado and a grandson, Spc. Casey Harding, US Army.
He is the son of the late Lionel and Naomi Lockard and husband of the late Betty Mae Hafner. Of his large family, he was the second eldest. His siblings include the late Virginia Starner, Gwendolyn Rill of Westminster, Jessie Lockard of Westminster, Lorraine Stair also of Westminster and the late Arthur (Pee-Wee) Lockard. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
During Brentwood’s adult lifetime, he and his late wife were active in the Children’s Aide Society and provided a temporary and loving home for many infants, children and teens. Of the many who called him ‘Dad’, Sue Stem of Hanover, Pa., Cheryl Morris of Highsprings, Florida and Teri Murphy of Indian Head, Md., and their families have remained very important in Brentwood’s life.
A memorial service to celebrate Brentwood’s life will be held at the Westminster United Methodist Church, Wednesday, April 8, at 12:00 noon, with light refreshments following the service. A military memorial service will be held in the future for the family at Arlington Cemetery, where the remains of Brentwood and his late wife, will be placed together.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the Mayberry Church of God, 2428 Mayberry Rd., Westminster, Md., 21158 and the Westminster United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen, 162 East Main Street, Westminster, Md.,21157.
