Brig. Gen Bain McClintock's Obituary
Brigadier General Bain McClintock passed on Sunday, April 17, 2011. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Charlotte; his sons Peter and Andy and grandchildren Holly Rae, Andrew and Alexandra. He served as a United States Marine from 1950 to 1982 including combat tours in Korea and Vietnam. He then worked for IBM in the Federal Sector Division 1983 to 1992. Bain will be missed and his example never forgotten. There will be a memorial service at Falcons Landing, Monday, May 2 at 4p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 18, 2011 at 9 am at Memorial Chapel at Ft. Myer. Interment will follow Arlington National Cemetery.
BGen McClintock retired from the Marine Corps on 1 Aug 1982. BGen McClintock, a native son of Martinsville, IN, was born on 26 Apr 1928. He graduated from South Side High School, Ft. Wayne, IN in 1946 and from Purdue University in Jun 1950 with Bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering and Naval Science and Tactics.
He entered the military establishment as an NROTC midshipman at Purdue University in 1946. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1950, and upon completion of The Basic School, Quantico, VA, in Mar 1951, was assigned as Executive Officer of Company H. 3d Battalion, 8th Marines, 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC. He served in various command and staff capacities with the 8th Marines until Feb 1953 when he was transferred to the 1st Marine Division in Korea, where he served with the 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, as a company executive officer and Commanding Officer, as well as Battalion S-4. He returned from overseas in Apr 1954 and was assigned his first tour at Headquarters Marine Corps.
He served at HQMC with the G-3 Division, in the Operations and Training Branch. This was followed by a tour with the 1st Marine Brigade in Hawaii from Oct 1957-Jul 1959, where he was the Brigade Training Officer and a Company Commander in the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, was followed by his assignment to the Advanced Infantry Course at Ft. Benning, GA, until May 1960.
Following a 3-year tour as an instructor at the Senior School, Quantico, he was assigned to the Naval Advisory Group in Korea until Mar 1964. He served there as Assistant G2/G-3 Advisor at Headquarters ROKMC and Senior Advisor 1st ROKMC Division.
He returned to the 2d Marine Division, Camp Lejeune in May 1964, where he again served with the 8th Marines as Battalion Executive Officer, Commanding Officer and Regimental S-3 until Apr 1966. While serving as Regimental S-3, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in Sept. 1965.
From Apr 1966-Aug 1969, he served with the Western Team, Joint Planning Group at HQMC, followed by his assignment to the Republic of Vietnam as Regimental Executive Officer, 7th Marines.
In Mar 1970 he was assigned to the 4th Marines on Okinawa. He served as Regimental Executive Officer and Commanding Officer until Sep 1970 when he again returned to HQMC as Senior Member of a study group on personnel assignment. The following year he was assigned as Head, Career Planning Branch, Personnel Department. From July 1972-JuI1973, he was a student at the Naval War College, Newport, Rl. He reported to the 9th Marine Corps District in Jul1973 and was assigned as District Director on 1 Sep 1973. Upon completion of his tour as the Director, 9th Marine Corps District, he returned to HQMC and was assigned to the Manpower Plans and Policy Division, Manpower Department, where he served until Feb 1978.
BGen McClintock was promoted to his present grade on 1 Mar 1978 and assigned duty as the Assistant Depot Commander, MCRD, San Diego, CA on 11 Mar 1978. He was transferred to the 3rd Marine Division and assigned duty as Assistant Division Command on Okinawa, in May 1980.
He also served as CG 9MAB during that same period. Prior to his retirement, BGen McClintock served as the Commanding General, 1st Marine Brigade, FMF, Pacific, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star.
