Dear Julie, Suzanne, and Mrs. McGehee,
I was sad to hear of Mr. McGehee's passing. You all were such a big part of my childhood and I have always thought of you with such happy memories. There is one story in particular that Doug and my girls have heard many times.
I think that Julie and I spent the better part of one year of our lives playing Zim Zam every day after school. The best afternoons of Zim Zam though were the ones when Mr. McGehee would return from a trip to Bluefield and present us with the watermelon Jolly Ranchers from his trip. We'd sit on the back wall of your driveway and suck on one of those and talk about how they were the best tasting things ever, play another round of Zim Zam, and then have another Jolly Rancher. It was six-year-old bliss. I can't tell you how blown my mind was, years later, when I found out that you can purchase Jolly Ranchers anywhere, not just in Bluefield, and that they came in other flavors. I really thought that only Mr. McGehee had access to them! To this day I think of your dad and you all each time I have one!

The news of Calvin's passing left me both heart broken and speechless. I will surely miss my dear sweet friend. Calvin was the epitome of a true Southern Gentleman. Very sweet with great integrity and a little curmudgeonly on the side for good measure. I meet Calvin when he started his real estate career. The week he started was my second week with the company and my supervisor was on vacation. Calvin had a million questions. I had NO answers. But together we found the answer to every question. I think that formed a forever bond between us. I loved Calvin's sense of humor and the way he told a story. I loved how he didn't get in a hurry whether it was locking his car or ordering ice tea at dinner. Alan and I always enjoyed visiting with him and Judy both in Durham NC and Ashburn VA. I know how much Calvin has enjoyed seeing his family grow and prosper. He was extremely proud of Suzanne and Julie and his love for Judy was steadfast and true.
Judy and family, I will continue to hold you close in my thoughts and prayers.

Calvin, Calvin, Calvin - Oh My
Nobody could tell a story quite the way he could. We met during his real estate journey and I will never forget the day he was out during lunch and got caught up in the midst of the police chasing a crime suspect. His expressions and his hands and that wonderful delightful giggle will be etched in my mind forever. He, Beth and I would go to dinner periodically and you knew he would not let you 'not' have dessert. We always shared and we would let Calvin choose.... and it was always the brownie sundae (and he would giggle as if we were getting away with something). We could talk for hours... he was interesting and interested. A fine gentleman who took care of those he cared about. He was only in my life for a short period of time but it is a time I will always treasure.

One day while visiting Judy (when they were living in Durham), I noticed Chiquita banana stickers on the inside of a cabinet door . When I asked Judy about it, she said,"Oh, for some reason, Calvin is fascinated by the different stickers and likes to collect them." With amused empathy, I told her I thought my husband George was the only person who did such a thing.....exactly ! Judy, myself and 2 other friends headed for a week at the beach every summer for 10yrs. We always laughed and figured our husbands had a week of vacation, too. However, when we would return and arrive at the Mcghee home...Calvin was there to greet Judy with a kiss and carry her little black suitcase. Always seemed glad and relieved to have her home again. When we read his obituary, we were impressed by all Calvin has done in his lifetime, but his godly life and example will always standout. Love to Judy, Suzan, Julie and family and may God's Peace and Comfort be present with you each day.
