Carl W. Schaad's Obituary
Carl Schaad, 97, of Potomac Falls VA, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Inova Loudoun Hospital.
Born on May 25, 1917 in Newberg, Oregon he was the son of the late William Schaad and Lucy Werth. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.
He served in the Army from 1941 until 1972 and was stationed in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, the day we began WWII. Further assignments were in Australia, New Guinea, Leyte, Mindanao and Mindoro in the Philippines. Right after the war he was in occupied Japan and was one of the first to visit Hiroshima in October 1945. He also served in Paris, Ft. Still, Bonn, the Pentagon, and the Army War College. Carl was awarded the Silver Star for single handedly taking out a Japanese machine gun and capturing a prisoner. Among many other decorations he was also awarded the bronze arrowhead for his combat amphibious landing on Leyte. Carl made a total of four combat amphibious landings in his career and served with distinction in Vietnam.
Carl and his wife moved to Falcons Landing in 1996 from their home in McLean, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary, and their daughter, Caroline.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Falcons Landing with Father Sly officiating. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
