Jack Mcenaney
Very sad to hear of Coach Zaleski’s passing and my deepest condolences to his family. He was an absolutely superb football coach and was affectionately known as ‘Coach Z’ by all linemen who played on the JEB Stuart varsity football teams of the 1960s and early 1970s. I was in Stuart’s Class of 1972, having played on both the 1970 and 1971 season teams, and never had a better technical coach in terms of teaching offensive/defensive line play and technique. He was also very much a family man, as I recall that he always brought his son (probably 6 or 7 at the time) to our two-a-day summer practices prior to the first day of school. In fact, his son was pictured in the 1972 yearbook right in between our two co-captains.
Coach Z also had a great sense of humor, as he would occasionally get the linemen all around him to tell a joke or two. This was typically during those summer practices and it actually had the effect of getting your mind off the stifling August heat and humidity. He truly was an outstanding and savvy football coach, I feel very fortunate and honored to have played for him.
RIP, Coach Z.
