Col. Andrew Alfred Johnston's Obituary
Colonel Andrew (Andy) A. Johnston Jr., a retired United States Air Force officer, passed away at his residence at Falcons Landing, Potomac Falls VA on December 12, 2009.
Andy was born on January 6th, 1917 to Andrew A. Johnston Sr. and Mary C. Johnston of New Orleans Louisiana. Andy was married to his wife, Laura B. Johnston, for sixty three years. Andy is survived by his wife Laura, also of Falcons Landing, his brother Eugene Johnston of New Orleans LA, his daughter Kathleen A. Hopkins of Reston VA, his two sons Robert A. Johnston of Anchorage AK and Michael D. Johnston of Oak Hill VA, his seven grandchildren Andrew and Mark Waskow, Zachary and Amanda Johnston, Robert, Anne and Eleanor Johnston, and by 5 great grandchildren.
Andy grew up in New Orleans LA during the great depression. The oldest of seven brothers and sisters, Andy helped provide for his family by selling newspapers and bread loafs on Church Street in down town New Orleans. In 1931 as a teenager, Andy attended seminary school in hopes of becoming a priest. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 where he served his first tour of duty until he retired in 1945. Andy married Laura in 1946 and re- enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1947. Andy served in the Air Force until 1965 when he retired as a full Colonel. He and his family moved to Annandale Virginia in 1963 where they resided until 1996 when Andy and Laura moved to Falcons Landing Retirement Community. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked as a civil engineer at the Pentagon until 1985. Andy spent his remaining years of his life traveling and being the best husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa to his wife and family members.
Funeral services for Col. Johnston have been rescheduled for Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 8:45 am, at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, VA.
Graveside services will follow with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
