Col. John D. Swennsen's Obituary
COL John D. (Jack) Swensson (USA, Ret) was born on 2 December 1918 in Junction City, Kansas, the son of Ephraim Karl Swensson of Malmo, Sweden, and Henrietta M. Swensson of Kansas City, MO. 7 December 2009 He was 91 years of age, and was a loving husband for 67 years to Virginia (Ginner) W. Swensson of Wichita, Kansas. Mrs. Swensson now lives at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, VA. He is also survived by two sons, Robert Lee Swensson of Vienna, VA and John Karl Swensson of Saratoga, CA, and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
After finishing high school in his home town of Junction City, KS, he worked as a bank teller and attended the University of Wichita (later Wichita State University), where he met Ginner. A member of “The Greatest Generation,” he joined the Army in June of 1941 and attended Officer Candidate School. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps and served in WWII, where he commanded a Truck company in Burma. He also served as a Logistics Advisor in Viet Nam, serving in both Saigon and Can Tho in the Delta. He graduated from Park College in Parkville, MO. He also served as a Petroleum Logistics Specialist in Yokohama, Japan; Heidelberg, Germany; and NATO Headquarters in Paris.
Cremation has occurred, and inurnment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance in Colorado Springs, CO. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Capital Hospice Attn: Philanthropy Office, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, VA 22042
