Cono "Sam" Navatta's Obituary
Retired civil engineer, Cono Samuel (Sam) Navatta, age 84, peacefully passed away on February 26, 2015 with his family by his side in Leesburg, Virginia. He was born in NYC, on February 17, 1931 to Italian immigrants Giacomo and Rachele (Monaco) Navatta, who predeceased him. It was in NYC that he met his wife of 58 years, Irene Concetta Alvine. The young couple moved to Elmira, New York, where they raised their 3 children before coming to Alexandria, Virginia. Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by his wife Irene and his eldest daughter Rachael Navatta Criley, his brothers Domenick and Daniel Navatta, and his sisters Anna (Anthony) Giaquinto and Arcangela (Pietro) Calabrese, a niece Maryanne (Giaquinto) Curry, and a nephew Kenneth Navatta.
Sam is survived by his daughters Susan (David) Hembach of Leesburg and Robin (Douglas) Converse of Warrenton. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Scott (Julianna) Hembach, Marc, Margaret, Daniel and Samantha Hembach of Leesburg, Nicole and Zoe Criley of Annandale and Theresa Converse of Warrenton, Virginia. The day before his death, his first great grandchild, Deacon James Hembach of Leesburg was born. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews; Antonette (Thomas) Sansevero, Rochelle (Michael) Igoe, James (Sharon) Navatta, Jackie (Donna) Navatta and Vito (Donna) Navatta, and nephews by marriage, Anthony, Alfred and Andrew (Anna) Alvine and 2 sisters‐in‐law, Emily (Griffo) Navatta and Anna (Percocco) Navatta.
Sam enjoyed life as it was and lived it well. He was an avid golfer, loved Syracuse University basketball and the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. He retired from the City of Alexandria as the superintendent of public works and spent 17 years in Warrenton, Virginia and traveling to and from Europe and the North Carolina Outer Banks. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His calm demeanor and wonderful sense of humor allowed for many friendships through the years. He will be missed.
A memorial celebration of his life was held at 1 pm on Saturday May 9th at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, located at 158 Catoctin Circle SE, Leesburg, Virginia, 20175.
