I’m sorry I’m late with this but I just saw the sad news and felt compelled to give my memories of the Coach.
I would first like to offer my condolences to the family for their loss.
When we go through this life we encounter thousands of people that might be directly involved in our lives. Some pass through without much memory and then there are the rare few…Coach Fritz was one of those for me.
I was too young to realize at the time how significant and impactful he was to my life, as well as he was impactful to so many others lives. I grew to realize later how important this larger than life person was in my life.
My memory of Coach Fritz was that of a commanding figure, always steadfast, knowledgeable, a decision maker, a real leader…a real roll model for me.
In sports it was a simple formula to please him, just do your job…in disappointment you didn’t get harsh words but a glaring look that delivered the message…do better!
I played for Coach Fritz in football and baseball for just one year and it was a most memorable year. There were many high points but I’m including a most memorable for sure. I’ve included a picture of the 1970 Sailor’s Championship win which I didn’t see in the photo collection. We had just won the last game of the season to secure the Championship and you could really tell this by the big smiles on everyone’s faces. Coach Fritz didn’t have a big crazy smile for the picture but you can see it in his face he was most pleased with everyone on the team. He mentored all of us equally but I know that he was most assuredly proud of both Danny and Eddie.
