Danny Richard May's Obituary
Danny Richard May passed away on June 27, 2024, in Leesburg, VA, at the age of
86. He was born on October 27, 1937, in Arlington, VA. Danny was a well
respected member of his community, a loving figure in his family, and a highly
regarded banker and businessman.
Danny was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School in Arlington VA. He
went on to serve in the US Army before continuing his educational pursuits. At
just 17 years old, he worked as a bookkeeper and teller for the Arlington Trust
Company while pursuing his undergraduate studies at George Mason University
and American University. Danny then went on to a successful career in banking.
He became a senior Vice President with Arlington Trust Company and honorably
held President and Chief Executive Officer positions at Hamilton Bank and Trust,
Security Bank in Manassas, and F&M Bank in the Northern Virginia region.
After 45 years of dedicated service in the commercial banking industry, he retired
in 1999 and began a new chapter in his professional career as a realtor with Long
and Foster in Annapolis, MD.
Danny married the love of his life, Jeri in January of 1996. Between the two, they
created a blended family with six children and eventually 14 grandchildren and
two great grandchildren. Danny and Jeri lived in Leesburg, VA and eventually built
their dream home in Annapolis.
Annapolis and the Severn River have always been a large part of Danny’s life. He
purchased the small family cottage in Epping Forest where he and his family spent
their summers boating, fishing, crabbing and entertaining friends and family. His
crab feasts were famous among those fortunate enough to attend! Eventually
Danny and Jeri razed this small cottage and built their dream home where they
frequently hosted social gatherings for family, friends, and neighbors.
Danny was always active in civic and community service throughout his life. He
was involved with the Jaycees, served on the Epping Forest Board as the
Community Property Chairperson and was an active member in the Epping Forest
Chapel.
Danny was an accomplished, self-taught master carpenter/woodworker, and
stained glassman. He built numerous beautiful pieces of furniture over the years.
Danny is survived by his wife of 32 years Jeri May; daughters Denise McGovern
(Joe), Cheryl Simmers (Bob) and Anne McCoy (Don), and extended family Angela
Bell (Tim), Johnny Mitchell and Eric Mitchell. He is also survived by his sister
Dianna Hollingsworth, sister-in-law Rosemary May, his 14 grandchildren and 2
great grandchildren. Danny was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Cleveland
May, sister Barbara Guenther, and brother George May.
Danny was always professional, a snazzy dresser, “Dapper Dan”, and always
welcomed any stranger with open arms. A legacy of his selfless nature and a
warm smile will live on in his family’s loving memories.
A private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
