Dellabell "Sissy" Evelyn Grimm's Obituary
Dellabell ("Sissy") Evelyn Grimm was born on March 31, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA to John and Della (Markle) Homoney. She grew up in a large family in Monroeville, PA and later went to Mansfield College to study Education. There she met her husband Aaron Grimm and had her 1st child, Missy.
Her teaching degree brought her to Loudoun County where she taught 2nd grade at Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, VA for more than 42 years. It was here that she found her calling, committing herself to growing and nurturing the minds of young children. This was her gift.
Sissy was loved by her students and teacher friends who remember her for all the little "extras" she gave them, such as the Christmas Teddy Bears, her String Art Easter Eggs, her Valentine's placemats, her green hard boiled eggs for Dr. Suess' birthday, not to mention the thousands of cookies she baked each Christmas Season as gifts for all.
When she wasn't teaching, Sissy volunteered her time with several organizations. She started at Loudoun Interfaith Relief in 1993, served on the Board of Directors from 1999 to 2003 and remained a loyal servant dedicated to feeding the hungry (logging in over 2700 hours) until her illness this past December. She received "The President's Volunteer Service Award" from the U.S. President for her 25 years of service.
Sissy also walked hundreds of miles over the last 16 years to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Events. First she was a team member, then a team captain, and finally served on the event committee, where she co-chaired with her daughter for the Kids Relay Recess activities at both the annual event and also at her beloved school.
After retiring from teaching just 2 1/2 years ago, Sissy volunteered her time at the Adler Center in Aldie, VA with Capital Caring by making "tuck-in-calls" to make sure in-home patients were comfortable with all the supplies they needed. She also helped with bereavement mailings and floral arrangements. We are so grateful for the care they provided in turn to Sissy during her battle with metastatic breast cancer. They are truly Angels on Earth.
Sissy, 68, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018, at her home in Leesburg, VA surrounded by family and a few close friends.
She leaves a hole in the hearts of those she left behind - her husband, Aaron Grimm; her children: Melissa ("Missy"), Aaron, and Dustin Grimm; her grandchildren: Logan, Keiran, and Ava Smith; Peyton, Rylan, and Hannah Grimm; her brother, Jack Homoney; and three sisters: Patricia Beatty, Mary Jane McNelly, and Barbara Thomas; along with host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and past students.
A funeral service is scheduled for 12 Noon on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Destiny Church, 37 Catoctin Circle SE, Leesburg, VA 20175, with Pastor Greg Wigfield officiating. Following the service will be a "Pig Out" (Potluck) to celebrate her life. Sissy loved planning monthly "Pig Outs" at her school. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle SE, Leesburg, VA 20175, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday, April 7th. Interment will be private at Leesburg Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sissy's name to Loudoun Hunger Relief, 750 Miller Drive, Suite A-1, Leesburg, VA 20175 or Capital Caring, The Adler Center for Caring, 24419 Millstream Drive, Aldie, VA 20105.
