Dewayne C. Miller, Commander USN retired – February 25, 2006
Dewayne C. Miller of Leesburg, Virginia passed away peacefully at home after a long and well lived life of 84 years. He is survived by Evelyn, his devoted wife of 59 years; loving children, daughter Petra P. Hoffman, sons Donald, Lawrence and his wife Deborah, and Richard and his wife Joy. He was a beloved grandfather to six, Christopher, Nicole, Alexandra, Sean, Rebecca and Samantha, and one great grandchild, Abigail.
Dewayne Miller was born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin to Martin and Clara Miller. He left the University of Wisconsin in September 1943, attended Midshipmen School at Harvard University and entered Navy service as an Ensign. He was assigned to shipboard duty in the Pacific Theater where he participated in the Liberation of the Philippines, the Battle for Okinawa, the occupation of Okinawa, and the Occupation of Japan. Upon retuning from WWII he received a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and was commissioned as a Regular Navy Lt. Junior Grade in 1948.
He went on to hold command positions in the Navy Supply Corp in Washington, DC, Norfolk, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. As a young Lieutenant Commander he was stationed in Europe as part of the Joint NATO command during the early cold war. He later served as the Senior Supply Officer on board the USS Vulcan, the Supply Admiral’s Flag Ship during the Cuban Missile Blockade. He retired for the Navy in 1963 after 20 years of active duty.
After retiring from the Navy he began a 20 year career as a commercial banker, working as an Assistant VP at Gerard Trust Bank in Philadelphia and Ambler, PA, and later as a senior manager with a bank in Ocean City, NJ.
Dewayne Miller is well remembered as a tireless father and grandfather who gave of himself to support the Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Troop Leader for many years, served as an Usher and active member of the United Methodist Church, and made sure all his children went to college. He was a lifelong member and officer of the Kiwanis Club of America, an avid bowler who won many awards in the Navy, an accomplished traveler, and a Harvard MBA that could still fix just about anything. Most of all he was a man who left behind a wonderful legacy of quiet heroism and dedication to his family, country and God. Good Luck Dad!
Funeral Services Tues, March 14,1:00 pm, Loudon Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Cr. SE Leesburg, VA. Internment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers make donations to Capital Hospice, 6565 Lee Highway Suite 501, Falls Church, VA 22042.
