Edward "Ed" Louis Bartholomew's Obituary
Edward “Ed” Louis Bartholomew, 90, of Leesburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 30, 2026.
Born on August 12, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ed was the son of the late Paul Bartholomew and Eulalia Puckett Bartholomew. He spent his early years on a farm in Charlotte County, Virginia—an upbringing that shaped his lifelong work ethic, humility, and deep appreciation for people from all walks of life.
Ed graduated from Virginia Tech in 1957 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and began a distinguished career that spanned decades and continents. He worked with Honeywell’s Brown Instrument Division before joining Reaction Motors, where he collaborated with fellow scientists on the Apollo lunar module engines, contributing to one of history’s most extraordinary achievements.
He later transitioned into management consulting with Booz Allen and became a partner at Arthur Young International (now Ernst & Young). As Director of the International Management Consulting Division, he advised government leaders at the highest levels; the World Bank, USAID and defense agencies worldwide. His work took him to more than 65 countries, reflecting both his professional excellence and adventurous spirit. In 1979 while leading a multinational consulting team in Tehran to modernize telecommunications systems, he courageously ensured the safe evacuation of his team during the Iranian Revolution.
Ed was deeply committed to service, volunteering as Director of AmCham Cuba in connection with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He served on the board of Mercy Corps, a humanitarian global NGO and was a member of The Georgetown Consulting Group-all helping to grow trade and business while improving lives around the world.
Above all, Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family beyond measure. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Carol Christensen Bartholomew; his sons, Edward Bartholomew, Stephen Bartholomew, Timothy Bartholomew (from a previous marriage), and his daughter, Natalie Caprano; his grand-children, Randyn Bartholomew, Janice Skarzynski, Louis Bartholomew, Lola Caprano and Aria Caprano; and his great grandchildren Zoe and Morgan Skarzynski.
Known for his sharp intellect, captivating storytelling, and warm Southern charm, Ed had a rare ability to connect with anyone he met. He was generous, curious, and full of life—equally at ease with farmers, laborers, and world leaders alike. He embodied the spirit of the words from Lewis Carroll’s poem, The Walrus and the Carpenter: he could “talk of many things: of shoes-and ships-and sealing wax-of cabbages-and kings.”
Ed will be remembered for his extraordinary life, his global impact, and the deep love he shared with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ed's honor to Mercy Corps.
