ELIZABETH T. HAROLD's Obituary
ELIZABETH T. HAROLD
Elizabeth Teresa Harold, 92, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 13, 2023 in Leesburg, Virginia. Born on August 28, 1930 in her grandparents' home in Bishopbriggs, Scotland, Elizabeth was the third child of Mary Ann (McCallum) McEleney and Thomas McEleney. After attending Scottish elementary and secondary schools during the worst years of the Great Depression and World War II, she left school to go to work at the age of 14.
On August 16, 1952, she married her loving lifelong spouse Charles Harold. Their daughter Roberta was born in 1953, followed by daughter Bernadette in 1958. The family, accompanied by Elizabeth's widowed father, emigrated to the Northern Virginia area in 1965. Elizabeth was a homemaker and worked at Sears, Roebuck and Co. for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She has left her family with many quilts and afghans attesting to her skills.
In 1991, upon Charles' retirement from a long career as a social studies teacher in Falls Church, Virginia, Elizabeth and he moved to Hyannis, MA where Charles died in 1995 and where she continued to live until worsening health issues brought her to Leesburg in 2021 to be closer to family. In Hyannis, she was a steady and dedicated volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital and at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's food pantry.
Predeceased by her husband Charles, her parents, her elder sister Anna (McEleney) Lafferty, and her brother, Rev. Robert J. McEleney, she is survived by her daughters Roberta Harold and Bernadette Holland, their spouses Wayne Fawbush and Bruce Holland., her granddaughters Kristin Marie (Holland) Kelly and Jennifer Anne Elizabeth Holland, Kristin's husband Randall Kelly, and her adored great-granddaughters, Dakota and Caroline Kelly, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Elizabeth never lost her affection for her native Scotland and, in accordance with her wishes, she will be interred with her parents and her husband at St. Peter's Cemetery, Dalbeth, Glasgow, Scotland in early July, following a funeral Mass at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Cardowan, where she and Charles were married. A memorial Mass will also be held at 11 a.m. on January 30, 2023 at St. John the Apostle R.C. Church in Leesburg. Cremation and other arrangements are by Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg.
The family would like to thank the Home Instead caregivers of Hyannis, MA, and the resident care staff of Poet's Walk Memory Care Community and Capital Caring Hospice for their compassionate care of Elizabeth. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a memorial donation to your local food shelf.
