Emilia…I’ve thought of you so often since I heard the news. You were my best friend throughout childhood, and I think back on our memories so often. Our obsession with 3OH!3, tanning at the Woodlea pool with a case of chocolate chip granola bars on hand. Drinking our fancy mugs of orange juice through a straw as we watched scary movies on the couch. Art Class our senior year, where you made a beautiful oil pastel of a Flamenco Dancer that’s still in my family’s house to this day. Our neighborhood walks, working together at the pie shop, and making trips to Dunkin’ way too often.
We became different people and took different paths, and I am sorry for not knowing the woman you became in recent years. You are forever in my memories as one of the people who shaped me. I see other stories from people speaking to your advocacy and standing up for what’s right, and I think back to your moral compass always being pointed in the right direction. Always keeping in mind the common good and having empathy for humanity as a whole. I wish you and your family peace, and I am grateful for the privilege of having had you in my life for as long as I did.
With love,
-Jess
