“Auntie Lee” and I have always had a very special relationship. Being my mother’s younger sister, she was only 17 when I was born. She was a huge part of my life - ALL OF MY LIFE! At an early age (8 years old), I took my first plane trip solo to visit her in Washington DC. For many years after that and well into college I visited every summer and sometimes during semester breaks. I have so many fond memories of the Napier Street neighborhood and being one of the kids on the block. One in particular still lives today…on summer nights Auntie Lee, Uncle Merv, my cousins and I would take a ride in the convertible in the cool of evening often stopping for ice cream along the way. While driving those country roads the perfume of honeysuckle filled the air. To this day whenever I smell the fragrance of honeysuckle I am reminded of that sweet memory.
When I had children of my own the visits continued…Auntie Lee so enjoyed taking us to the holiday performances of the Nutcracker and on tours of the city she loved. We saw every sight there was to see!
During her years in Charlottesville she was always included in family events and celebrations. Known to all of my friends as “Auntie Em”, she loved attending school programs, having dinner with friends, going to the movies, theater, opera, and concerts. She even became a huge UVA sports fan…baseball games being her favorite!
Auntie Lee showered me, my husband, my children, and grandchildren with her love. She was generous in every way. She will be missed by all of us!
