Frances Sue Duncan's Obituary
Frances Sue (Frey) Duncan, 83, of Ashburn, VA, beloved mother and wife died on July 20th.
Frances (Fran) was born in Chickasha, OK to the late Frank F. Frey and Wilma Rose Frey. She was raised in Chickasha, OK and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1957. She graduated from Benedictine Heights College (a two-year college) in Tulsa, OK in 1959 and later attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK. In April of 1960, she married Thomas (Tom) Duncan and together they and their four children moved often during his Naval career. Fran Duncan was a beautiful woman in all ways. She was a devoted mother and a loving wife. She raised their four children: Sandy, Julie, Nancy, and David during Tom’s many long periods away from home on Navy deployments. And when her children had their own children, she was the Grammy that was always there.
Fran was a joyful, thoughtful mother and Grammy who made everything fun. She was a wonder at creating magic on birthdays and Christmas, including mailing birthday cakes to kids in college and coordinating Christmas gifts so that each grandchild got just what they wanted. Fran was known for her splendid baking talents, and her family knew that the yellow Tupperware in the fridge or pantry always held something delicious, like her famous fudge or 7-layer cookie bars. Fran was an avid attendee of youth athletic and performing arts events, and she could be heard cheering on her kids and grandkids at hundreds of games and performances.
Fran and Tom had a beautiful partnership and have been role models for their children and grandchildren. When Tom proposed to Fran, she asked him, "Will we have fun together when we are old?" They were married for 63 years, and had a relationship built on fun, faith, love, laughing, listening and adventure. Fran had a deep faith, and she believed in a loving God and a beautiful heaven. Her family finds comfort in the knowledge that she'll be up in heaven, waiting for the rest of us, with her great hugs, beautiful smile, and maybe even one of her famous sandwiches.
She will be missed!
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Wilma Rose Frey, her sister Phyllis Phillips, brother Dennis Frey and daughter Julie Pooley. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Thomas Duncan of Ashburn, VA; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Malcolm Hodge of Portland, OR, Nancy and Paul Mamros of Reston, VA; son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Lynne Duncan of Herndon, VA, and son-in law Jack Pooley of Sterling, VA, plus eight grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, VA on Thursday, July 27th from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Potomac Falls, VA on Friday, July 28th at 11:00 with interment to follow at the St. John the Apostle Catholic Cemetery in Leesburg, VA.
