Garfield Lucas' Obituary
Mr. Garfield Lucas, a resident of Leesburg, VA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the age of 84.
The youngest of nine children born to the late Albert Lucas and the late Hy-Peaches Smith, Garfield was born on February 24, 1928 in Hillsboro, VA. Sgt. Lucas served his country honorably in the US Army, from March of 1951, until December 1952. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
In 1957 he met Doris Kenyon Ferrell and on June 20, 1959, they were married. Not having any children of their own, they were blessed to adopt a son Anthony Laval Lucas in October of 1977.
In the early 1970’s, Garfield joined the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, to which he was a devoted member alongside his wife Doris. He was ordained a Deacon of the church on April 28, 1976 where he served faithfully through his final days.
Garfield spent most of his years in home service and construction. He ended his career working for Ashburn Farm Partnership, retiring to his home in Leesburg in 2008. Garfield became ill in the summer of 2010 from lung cancer and other various ailments. He fought the good fight for two years until he was called home at 8:05 pm April 16, 2012.
In addition to his parents, Garfield is predeceased by his wife the late Doris Ferrell Lucas on April 20, 1993. He is also predeceased by his siblings, Harvey Lucas, Ralph Brown, Estelle Hyman, Albert Lucas, Elizabeth Jett, Haywood Lucas, Louvenia Cooper, and Cecil Lucas.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son Anthony L. Lucas of Sterling, VA; sister, Madeline Morris of Leesburg, VA; step-sister, Thelma Keys, of Washington, DC; niece, Sara Hyman of Leesburg, VA; as well numerous beloved family members and countless friends.
The family will receive guests from 10 to 12 noon at the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, 17406 Brownville Lane & East Colonial Highway, Hamilton, VA; where the funeral ceremony will follow and begin at 12 noon.
Interment will follow in Lucas Cemetery, Hillsboro, VA (located behind Asbury UMC).
