Gene Harris Lindsay's Obituary
CAPT. GENE HARRIS LINDSAY, USN RETIRED, 75, of Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, Virginia formerly of Fawn Lake in Spotsylvania, Virginia died on July 13, 2011 at his home with his family by his side.
Capt. Lindsay was born February 1st 1936 in Richmond, Virginia to the late William Kirk and Olive Harris Lindsay.
He entered the Corp of Cadets at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. After graduating from VPI, Capt Lindsay attended the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island. The day after he was commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy in April 1960, Capt Lindsay married Shelbie Moye, whom he had met during his undergraduate studies in Blacksburg and they moved to California to begin his US Navy career. Capt Lindsay served during Vietnam on board the USS Bigelow (DD-942), and his tours of duty took he and his family around the United States during his 24 year career. Following his retirement in 1983, Capt Lindsay worked for McDonald Douglas, continuing his focus on engineering services for over ten years.
Capt. Lindsay is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Shelbie Moye Lindsay of Ashburn; two children: Karen Lindsay Strong of Singapore, Scott Kendrick Lindsay and wife Annette of Ashburn. Two siblings, Patricia Lindsay Lilly & William Kirk Lindsay and a son in law, Robert Lowell Strong predeceased him. A memorial service will be held on October 18, 2011 at 1 pm at Fort Meyer Chapel. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
