George Keith Kistler's Obituary
George Keith Kistler, 77, of Broadlands, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
He was born on October 27, 1936 in Waterville, Kansas to the late Luke and Pearl Kistler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Kistler.
Keith enlisted in the Navy in the spring of 1957, and graduated from Midland Lutheran College in 1958. During his 22 years in the Navy he served aboard a variety of ships including the USS Oriskany, USS Parsons, USS William H. Stanley, USS NOA, and served as the Captain of the USS Luce from May 18, 1974 until May 3, 1976.
Following his retirement from the Navy in 1979, Keith worked at SAIC from October 1982 until his retirement in April 1999. Keith was a volunteer at the USO and Traveler’s Aid at Dulles Airport. He was a seven year member of Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church. Keith enjoyed being with family and friends, reading about history and historical figures and was an avid and persistent golfer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth Elizabeth (Daubenspeck); sons, William Kistler of Brentwood, MD, and Derek Kistler and his wife, Winnie of Knoxville, TN. Keith was a friend and “Grandpa” to many young children.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church with Pastor Eric Peterson officiating. The family will be welcoming guests starting at 6:00 PM. Following the service, there will be a coffee and dessert fellowship. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
