George Schmith's Obituary
George Bernard Schmith, Jr., of Hernando, FL formerly of Leesburg, VA died June 12, 2008 at Capital Hospice in Arlington, VA. Born on March 13, 1940, in Washington, DC, a son of George Bernard Schmith, Sr. of Plantation, FL and the late Ellen May Gill Schmith. He was also predeceased by his grandson George Garrett Carrales.
George, also known as Bernie to his family and classmates, graduated from McLean High School in 1958. He went on the serve his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Albany, GA where he met and married his wife Darnell Davis Schmith in 1961. Mr. Schmith worked for the Washington Star for 14 years before going to work for the Washington Post in 1977. He retired from the Washington Post as the Circulation Zone Manager after completing twenty-five years of employment. His hobbies included golf, hunting, and fishing.
In addition to his wife and father, George is survived by his daughters, Bonita Brewer of Denton, TX, Tammy McWay of Front Royal, VA, and Malinda S. and son-in-law Lathan Mahaffey of Leesburg, VA. He is also survived by his sister Donna L. Lemert of Leesburg, his brother William H. Schmith of Orange Park, FL; 7 grandchildren, Josh Godwin, Evie Lee and Jacob Brewer, Owen and Ashlyn Aronhalt; Lillian Grace and Ella Rose Mahaffey; and 5 great grandchildren, Olivia Carrales, Chloe, Austin and Christopher Godwin, and Isaiah Nuccio; plus 2 nieces, 2 nephews, and other family and friends.
Friends may call on Monday, June 16, 2008, from 1 to 3 and from 7 to 9 pm at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA 20175, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 2:00pm.
Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
