Gerald McLeod Brown's Obituary
Gerald McLeod Brown passed in his sleep early Christmas morning.
He was born on May 27, 1931, outside of London, Ontario, Canada but grew up on the Quebec border in Haileybury, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in math and physics, second in his class, or "next to last" as he told it because only 3 students tried the double math and physics program! Gerry married Mary Louise Hope-Johnstone on November 3, 1956, and had four daughters (Karen, Lesley, Laura, and Martha). Gerry and Mary were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and worked for the Canada Life Assurance Company in Toronto from 1952 to 1973. He then moved to the US, working there, first in DC and then Alabama, for approximately 10 years before returning to work for the Canada Life and an opportunity to work in London, England.
He, Mary, and their youngest daughter, Martha, lived in England until the early 1990s when they returned to Toronto. Retiring in Toronto, Gerry and Mary again moved to the US, first to South Carolina and then to Virginia.
Gerry was a bridge and cribbage player, gardener, shelf-hanger, painter, golfer, wallpaper hanger, tutor to his children and storyteller. Gerry was a much-loved individual, always quick with a smile and a story when needed. There was nothing he would not do to help his family or a friend.
He had been battling four cancers with dignity and a positive attitude for several years. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. As kids, Dad would often take us on a drive, exclaiming "I know a shortcut" or "I've never been here before!" We know he and Mom are off on their latest adventure, travelling a new road together.
Gerry's family, Karen, Lesley, Laura and Martha
