I served with Colonel Lazarro when he was Provost Marshal of Fort Belvoir, and ultimately the Commanding Officer/Provost Marshal of the newly designated, "Law Enforcement Battalion (Provisional)" at Fort Belvoir. It was unique because it was comprised of a "Garrison Military Police Company," the 521st MP Co., and a "Combat Support Military Police Company," the 437th MP Co which was the larger of the two companies.
He was a far better than average Commander, "Strict, fair and out of your hair," if you did you job. Encouraged his enlisted personnel to excel, and demanded that his officers lead by example.
A good man to be sure. May you rest in peace Colonel L.

Dear Dad,
As I think about your transition to the world beyond our own I remember that you are one of the things I am grateful for.
When I was ten years old, you were my best friend.
I admired your athletic accomplishments and how you traveled the world.
Your photos gave me a glimpse of worlds beyond our home.
Etched in pure black and white they turned trees into architecture.
My strongest memories of you are of your laughter.
I loved how you told jokes, danced, and laughed.
Rough housing and tickle-fests on the orange rug.
The three of us you, Michelle, and I in a rough and tumbled ball.
All of laughing until none of us could breathe.
That's what ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) means to me today.
Those memories.
Michelle can still send me into fits of laughter with a single word.
But I also cherish fond memories of the three of us together.
You taught me to play poker and pour beer.
Eat raw garlic and jalapeño peppers straight from the jar.
I loved how you cooked.
I'll never make as great a spaghetti sauce as you, but I have fun trying.
To this day I am impressed at how many things you made of wood.
Our beds, bookcases, and napkin dispensers.
All things that worked, not just art hung on walls.
This taught me that the best things in life don't comes from stores.
Instead they are made by the people we love.
Because of you I like to make things that work with my hands,
Take things apart to understand how they operate.
I plan to have a workshop where I make things for the people I love.
Perhaps I already have this with my studio where I create experiences.
Thank you for all these gifts.
Because we don't all learn life's lessons in the same order,
I wanted to be sure you knew how much I learned from you and how much you meant to me.
A lot of years have passed since then,
But I want you to know that when I was ten you were my best friend.
