About 3 years ago, Mama Gertie was in the hospital awaiting surgery on her back. She was slightly sedated. A young good looking doctor came in to ask and answer any questions she had. The doctor asked, "Mrs. Coates did you ever smoke?" Mama Gertie sat up and said, "I smoked, I drank, and I danced, and did everything "good girls" were not supposed to do". You go, Gertie!

My sweetie Mama Gertie......my memories of you I will forever hold in my heart. My childhood summer weekends with you and how you taught me to fry chicken. Teaching me the meaning of family and how special my mother really is. My summers and Christmas were my favorites with you! As an adult you taught me how to parent and pick my battles with my children. I will forever cherish the relationships they share with you and they leesons you taught them. Although I only met you once I knew you some through your daughter whom I fondly call Blanchie Baby. From her I learned you were quite a woman, one who was loved by many, valued & enjoyed family, one who participated in life, and for whom it was difficult to need to slow down and have others do for you. I fondly remember your dear mother and how much she loved and served at Chantilly Baptist Church. Reverend Payton and I always enjoyed being in her presence and sharing with her.
I regret that I will be unable to share in her Homegoing Service on Saturday as I will be out-of-town. Please know that I am praying for you and May the God of comfort be with you in the days to come.
