GLENN HUNTER BIRKITT Sr.'s Obituary
Dr. Glenn Hunter Birkitt, Sr., 92, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather and longtime resident of Loudoun County, died peacefully Friday, July 14, 2023, at Inova Loudoun Hospital.
Glenn was born June 13, 1931, in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, son of Virginia Shelly Birkitt and John Wiliam Birkitt. He graduated from Charles Town High School in 1949 and joined the United States Marines, serving in the Korean War, D Company Second Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, First Marine Division.
Following his military service, Glenn first attended Shepherd College where he met his future wife, Jo Ann Didawick of Moorefield, WV, and then attended West Virginia University, earning both a BS and later his DDS.
Glenn married Jo Ann Didawick on January 28, 1956, in Shepherdstown, WV. He first worked as a pharmacist before returning to WVU to attend dental school. He graduated in 1964 and that same year, established his dental practice. Glenn continued his dental practice in Leesburg for more than 40 years, before handing over the reins to his son, Dr. Cary Birkitt.
Glenn is pre-deceased by his eldest son, Dr. Glenn Hunter Birkitt, Jr., of Bristol, TN, and his sister, Sylvia Birkitt Dawson.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jo Ann Didawick Birkitt, of Leesburg, VA; by his children, Carolyn Jo (Curtis) Bruguiere, of Roseland, VA, Lara Amelia (James) Dunlap, of Aldie, VA, Cary Tucker (Judi) Birkitt, of Leesburg, VA, and John Gustin (Marny) Birkitt, of Brunswick, MD; his daughter-in-law, Diane Mallett Birkitt, of Bristol, TN; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service to honor Glenn’s life will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 11:30 am, at Catoctin Presbyterian Church in Waterford, VA.
Interment will be held by the family at a later date in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to Loudoun Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenn’s memory to Loudoun Hunger Relief.
