Gurcharan Singh Atwal's Obituary
Sardar Gurcharan Singh Atwal, 90, of Virginia, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 5, 1932, in Burnpur, India, Gurcharan was the second of four children of Sardar Kartar Singh Atwal and Sardarni Udham Kaur Atwal. He was a brilliant student and graduated from Banaras Hindu University in 1954 with a Bachelor's degree in mining engineering, standing third in his class.
After a successful career in mining in India, Gurcharan immigrated to the United States with his family in 1979. He worked as an Assistant Chief Engineer for the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection until his retirement in 1999.
Gurcharan was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a kind and generous man who always put others before himself. He was a pillar of strength and support for his family.
Gurcharan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sardarni Inderjit Kaur Atwal, three children, Reena Mahal, Sheena Deol, and Varinder Pal Atwal, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren
