Harold Blackmer Symes Jr.'s Obituary
Harold B. Symes “Hal” (Age 86)
Passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016 with his wife and children by his side.
A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a Masters of Fine Arts from American University, and a Navy veteran, Hal was a teacher and administrator in the Arlington Public School art program for many years. He also taught art education at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia, and drawing at Northern Virginia Community College. Hal had paintings in area shows including the Corcoran Gallery, Arlington Education Center, Arlington Arts Center, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center. He continued his passion for education into retirement by serving on the advisory council at George Washington University, Loudoun Campus for art exhibitions, and teaching art classes at the Ashby Ponds senior living community. He was a member of the Loudoun Sketch Club.
Hal is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith Symes; children, Paul Symes, Philip Symes, Helen Kohlhafer, and Diane Thompson. He had a special bond with each of his grandchildren; Hilary, Joseph, Emily and William.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 pm at Community Lutheran Church, 21014 Whitfield Place, Sterling, VA 20165. Burial will be in Lockport, NY.
