HARVEY M KEARNEY

Harvey M. Kearney, 72, departed this life on August 18, 2022, at Fairfax Hospital. He was born on March 31, 1950, in Hertford County, North Carolina and was the oldest of nine children. His parents, Rosetta Benthall and Roosevelt Kearney, preceded him in death, as well as a brother, Michael Powell. Harvey was united in marriage on June 28, 1980, to Mary M. Kearney and they recently celebrated 42 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife and two children, Sincere Kirabo (aka James Kearney) and Joy Johnson (Eric), and three grandchildren, Josiah Zigler, Kailyn Johnson, and Kamry Johnson. Also, he is survived by three sisters, Viola Benthall, Faye Lewis (Reverend W. Rob), and Etta Sessoms (Rickie); four brothers, Reverend Jeffrey Benthall (Kathy), Ernest Benthall, Minister Larry Benthall (Valiery), and Gregory Benthall. In addition, he is survived by one brother-in-law, James Moyer (Sherry) and ten sisters-in-law, Gladys King, Louise Galloway, Cathy Burch, Cecil Lowe, Reba Childress, Doretha Moyer, Danna Grier (Wagner), Veronica Brown (Glen), Peggy Powell (Deron), and Sabena Moyer. He is also survived by one aunt, Joann Langford. His extended family includes Tamika Zigler Dillard, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Harvey was a graduate of C.S. Brown High School in Winton, North Carolina, and Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. After graduating college, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served two years. Harvey was a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.® at Elizabeth City State University. In his Christian journey, Harvey accepted Christ and attended Cedar Lane Bible Way Church in Purcellville, Virginia. Whether you called him Coach, Boss, Mr. Kearney, or Papa Harvey, he was known for his love of life. His favorite pastime activities included coaching football and track, fishing, gardening, cooking, and barbecuing for family get togethers. He was also an avid supporter of the Washington Football team. His work career included teaching Health and Physical Education for Loudoun County Public Schools and twenty-eight years as a Technical Support Representative for Computer Associates in Herndon, Virginia. Even though Harvey lived in Leesburg for many years, he considered North Carolina his home. Harvey has overcome the world and asks all of us to “remember him with a smile and laughter.” In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Loudoun Hunger Relief or to the charity of your choice.
