Helen Marie Long's Obituary
Helen Marie Long, 86, of Ashburn, Virginia passed on Friday, April 22, 2016, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
Helen was born Saturday, April 5, 1930 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of the late Gerald E. Mack and the late Verna R. McGuire Mack. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael J. Long, in 2010, and brother-in-law, Francis P. Long in 2002.
Helen had a passion for teaching children. She worked for the Vestal Central School District in Vestal, New York from the mid 1960’s until her retirement in 1991, spending the majority of that time as a second grade teacher at Tioga Hills Elementary School in Apalachin, NY. After retiring, she relocated to Virginia to be closer to her children. Helen loved to give back to the community. She spent a large part of her retirement volunteering at hospitals and schools in Northern Virginia. She was an active member of the INOVA Loudoun Hospital Ladies Board and a devout parishioner of St. Theresa Catholic Church.
She leaves her family to cherish her memory including her three children, daughters, Maura Ellen Long (Gregory) Wells and Kathleen Anne Long; and son, Michael James (Molly) Long, Jr. all of Ashburn, VA; 4 granddaughters, Colby Leigh Caldwell, Lauren Elizabeth Long, Anja Maria Long, and Emily Marie Long. She also leaves her sister- in-law Mary Eileen (James F.) Gaffney, and brother-in-law Rev. Joseph J. Long.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 6 to 8 pm, at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, VA 20175.
A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at St. Theresa Catholic Church located at 21371 St. Theresa Lane Ashburn, Virginia 20147.
Interment will follow in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
