Henry Howard Smith II's Obituary
HENRY HOWARD SMITH, II, affectionately known as “Howard,” 82, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 in Leesburg, Virginia.
Born Sunday, September 21, 1941, in Ashland, Ohio he was the son of the late Dr. Howard Wayne Smith and Claribel Morris Smith.
Howard leaves many to cherish including his wife of 57 years, Milvia Budellazze Smith. His beloved daughters, Aliscia Lee, and Gabrielle Paucek, and sons-in-law, R. Joseph Lee and Christopher Paucek.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Alexandra Lee, Noah Paucek, and Henry Paucek.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Howard Wayne Smith, Jr., and his sister, Gretchen Buntschuh.
Howard attended Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, and served honorably in the United States Army before embarking on a distinguished career in the telecommunications industry.
Howard cherished a vibrant and fulfilling life, beginning with a childhood rich in summer camps, family time by Midwestern lakes, scouting clubs, and athletics with school friends. In his adult years, he embraced global travel adventures with his loving wife and children, creating treasured memories together. Passionate about sailing and boating, he also found joy in reading and solving crossword puzzles. In retirement, he and his wife, Milvia, enjoyed the serene beauty of the River Creek community in Leesburg, VA, where they formed lasting friendships and celebrated many milestones with friends and family.
Howard dedicated his career to the telecommunications industry, leaving a significant mark with a distinguished tenure at AT&T, where he worked across domestic offices throughout the Northeast. His professional journey also took him abroad, where he spent four years living and working in London with British Telecom, and contributed his expertise on-site in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Telecom. His career was marked by a commitment to advancing global communications and bridging technology across borders.
A Celebration of Life will be held at River Creek Club at a later date. Please check back for a date. Interment will be held privately at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Howard’s memory to local PBS network, WETA, or to the American Heart Association.
