Irving Gaskill's Obituary
Mr. Irving E. Gaskill, 84, of Leesburg, Virginia, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at INOVA Loudoun Hospital Center. Mr. Gaskill was born in Mount Holly, New Jersey in 1922. He was the son of the late Irving C. Gaskill and the late Mary (Liesch) Gaskill. A graduate of Trenton State Teachers College in 1943, he then received his Masters from the University of PA in 1947. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. From 1947 to 1949 he was an instructor in mathematics at Bowling Green University in Ohio. He did graduate work in mathematics and taught calculus at Johns Hopkins University from 1949-1951.
Mr. Gaskill entered the Federal Civil Service at the Army Map Service in 1951. There he performed research and analysis in geodetic adjustments for map control until 1956.
In 1956, Mr. Gaskill joined what would become the Mathematics and Computation Laboratory (MCL). This unit provided computational and analytical support to the Office of Defense Mobilization and successor agencies, which had responsibility for the non-military aspects of national defense. Mr. Gaskill served as director of MCL from 1969 until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Gaskill was a member of many organizations including NARFE, Leesburg Lions, National Genealogical Society, the American Mathematical Society, and the American Legion, Mt. Holly Post 11. He was active at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Horton of Dickerson, MD; two sons, Robert John Gaskill of Catharpin, VA, and Irving Thomas Gaskill of McDonald, PA; and
two grandchildren John and Shreya Gaskill. His wife, Bertha K. Gaskill, preceded him in death in 2003.
