Jack Robert Hernley's Obituary
Jack Robert Hernley of Leesburg, VA, passed away on November 10, 2021. He was born in Alverton, PA on May 4, 1935. By age 9 the family moved, and he spent his teen years growing up in Kent, Ohio.
Jack joined the Air Force in 1955, trained as an air traffic controller and was stationed at Bentwaters Air Force Base in England. After leaving the Air Force, he was hired by the FAA first in Norfolk, VA, and later transferred to Washington ARTCC in Leesburg, VA. After retiring in 1987, he began a lengthy tenure as a contract instructor teaching new FAA trainees the job he so loved.
With a passion for playing the drums that began in high school, this led him to eventually join a band with fellow controllers. They actively played at weddings and parties throughout Northern Virginia. A side job not done so much for money but simply for the love of playing.
Despite the strains of shiftwork, he still found the time to coach his kids’ baseball and softball teams. He even set up and taught a baseball scoring clinic for Little League in Falls Church, VA. Loving all sports, his true passion was for college football and that specifically centered around Notre Dame football. The fight song was something he taught to all the grandkids.
Jack leaves behind son David (Sally) of Aldie, VA, son Donny (Carly) of Manteo, NC, and son Danny of Leesburg, VA. Preceding him in death was his wife of 64 years, Barbara and a daughter, Dianne (Scott) Munn. Also, to cherish his memory are his 12 grandchildren and
2 great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 20th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, Leesburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad (checks payable to LCVRS13, P.O. Box 1178, Leesburg, VA 20177).
