James (Jim) Ferney's Obituary
James (Jim) Ferney, 80, of Lansdowne, VA passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary (Ambrose) and his son, Charles, his two granddaughters, Isabelle and Elise, who were his pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert James.
Jim was born in Boston, MA on September 23, 1943. He was the son of the late Francis X. Ferney and Catherine (Heavill) Ferney. He is survived by brothers John and his wife Gail of Quechee, VT and William and his wife Joyce of Falmouth, MA and sister-in-law, Patricia of Plainville, MA and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Green, and brother Joseph.
Jim graduated from Boston College in 1966. He started his career as a history teacher. After earning his substance abuse certificate from Stonehill College he worked as a counselor and case manager for over thirty years.
Jim lived in Walpole, MA for 70 years where he and Mary raised their children. He was active in the community teaching religious education at Blessed Sacrament for 40 years and serving as a Eucharistic minister. Jim and Mary ran the PreCanna program and served as volunteers in the youth ministry. He was also a youth basketball coach in a CYO league. Jim enjoyed reading, playing hockey, golf and assisting with his son’s baseball and basketball teams.
Jim retired in 2013 to Lansdowne Woods in Lansdowne, VA. There he served for nine years on the Building Facilities Committee for Potomac Ridge Condominium, five of those years as Chairman. He also served on the Election Committee, Budget and Finance Committee and Replacement Reserves Committee. His biggest passion in retirement was attending his granddaughters’ various events.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Ashburn, VA. Following the Mass, there will be a reception at Potomac Ridge Condominium, Lansdowne, VA in the Potomac Room. A burial will be held on August 31, 2024, in Walpole, MA at St. Francis Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to brainyridge.com. It is a non-profit camp for children with chronic medical conditions, including an inherited condition that runs in the family.
