James Martin's Obituary
James P. Martin, a retired Air Force Colonel and a resident of Falcons Landing Retirement Community in Sterling, VA, died on November 12, 2008 at the age of 89. A graduate of Syracuse University, he had a Master of Science degree from The Ohio State University.
Col. Martin served in the Army and Air Force 27 years, was a graduate of the Air War College and Air Command and Staff College and was in the first group in the Air Force to be designated Master Navigator. His flying assignments included combat bombing, medical evacuation, hurricane location and penetration, and airborne troop delivery. Subsequent to flying, his assignments included JCS staff duty, Space Surveillance and Space Systems Development.
His decorations included two awards of the Legion of Merit, five Air Medals and two Air Force Commendation Medals.
After retirement from the Air Force he was employed by Vitro Laboratories, where as a senior engineer, he was chief of the Engineering Studies Section.
Col. Martin was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Potomac Falls and performed volunteer service with the Red Cross at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Food for Others, Meals on Wheels and the Johnson Health Center. He was a former member of Westwood Country Club, The Military Officers Association, The Air Force Association and The Ohio State Alumni Association.
Survivors include Alyce his wife, of 64 years, three daughters, Joan Ebelberger of Columbus, OH, Nancy Keith of Cave Creek, AZ, and Marylee Slosson of Cockeysville, MD; six grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held on December 9, 2008 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Potomac Falls, VA.
Inurnment services will follow on December 9, 2008 at 3:00pm at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium.
