James Francis Thompson's Obituary
James Francis “Jim” Thompson passed away at home in McLean, Virginia on May 11, 2024, at the age of 64. A proud native of Arlington, Jim lived in Northern Virginia most of his life; but also owned several vacation properties in Sandbridge.
The first member of his family to graduate from college (the University of Virginia), Jim also later earned an MBA while working fulltime. Following his 30-year career in the federal government, Jim spent his free time volunteering in the McLean community.
Jim is fondly remembered for his distinct laugh, and ever-present smile, his sharp intellect, his love of Southern Rock; especially bluesy songs featuring a harmonica, the Washington D.C. sports teams, and his profound commitment to avoiding taking things too seriously. He never missed an opportunity to make a joke or to go to the beach and was always happiest near water.
He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Thompson, and sons Joseph Thompson and William Thompson (Kate) in whom he instilled a healthy appreciation of action movies and comedy. He is also survived by his three siblings: Joseph Thompson, Mary Howe (David), and Michael Thompson, and ten nieces and nephews. Jim was devoted to his family and never hesitated to offer help to anyone in need.
A Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Monday June 24, 2024 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Cir., Leesburg, VA 20175. Jim will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donating to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Capital Caring hospice, or the charity of your choice.
