I had worked with Jan for years at the Postal Service, but it wasn't until 2009 when she and I talked one-on-one as friends. And I discovered what a great friend she could be when one needed someone with whom to talk.
I will miss her.

So very sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. We worked together at First Virginia Bank, and although I had not been in touch with Jan in many years, will remember her smile and pleasant demeanor. Condolences to the family.
I’m so heartbroken to learn of Jan’s passing. She was a beaming light of joy to anyone lucky enough to know her. Rest easy my friend, your love and beautiful personality will now shine bright throughout Heaven. You will always be a cherished ΑΣΑ sister, JMU Duke, and beloved friend. May God Bless you and your family. 💔😢🙏🦅🇺🇸 Maureen Fogarty Ramirez
Loyal friend, sorority sister, and fraternity little sister, the Greek system at JMU was greatly enriched by Jan’s active involvement. Jan’s smile would light up a room and her easygoing, fun loving spirit made her not only approachable but a trusted friend to many. Much time has passed since those days at JMU but, no matter how long between visits, those friendships cemented by sisterhood prevailed like no time passed… just as silly, just as heartfelt, with a joyful Jan in the thick of it!
I’m also posting this photo of Jan from the very preppy JMU days of our time; I’d like to think she’s leading a cheer with the ASAs in the stands at a game. While we already miss her terribly, we now have her cheering us on from Heaven as our very special ASA angel. ❤️🪲❤️
Dear Jan,
It’s just so hard to believe that your sweet personality, inviting smile, and calming manner has left us on this side of glory. I know you are in a much better place now where there is no more sickness and no more pain. I know you are dancing with the angels to “Paradise by The Dashboard Lights” and living a new life of pure joy! I will miss your beautiful Christmas card letters filling us in on all the great successes and achievements of your family members, especially your adored nieces and nephews. Please save a seat for me and all of us that have always loved you. Rest in peace, dear Jan. We’ll see you in paradise.

Jan was such a delight. Always a smiling face. She loved her family, JMU friends, and ASA family. I’m honored to have called her my sister in Alpha Sigma Alpha. I so enjoyed being on her Christmas card list and getting updates on her family each year. Sending hugs to you in heaven dear friend.
For seven years, in Dayton, Ohio, my family lived next door to the Verfurth family. I had four children to their five. We lived next to each other for seven years - most of their growing up years. It was a magical time. Jan was a nice balance to all the boys around her. She was such a beautiful and cheerful young lady and she carried that into adulthood. She took such good care of her parents as they grew older. I will miss that connection to her family and especially her newsy Christmas letters. Rest in peace Jan – you are loved.

Jan, your passing sweeps over me with crashing grief. Yet, beneath the waves you still ground me, for when I was a young man your laughter and kindness assured me of the goodness of life. Thanks for being there, Tanks for the dance. Thanks for honoring Pi Kappa Phi (DeltaTau) as our little sister.
I met Jan at a job fair for First Virginia Bank (2004); was on the selection committee to hire Jan at the United States Postal Service and had the honor of working with Jan while she worked in Corporate Treasury at the USPS. We were fortunate to hire someone with her background, knowledge and personality. Jan was always upbeat; always happy; had an infectious laugh and was a joy to work with. I loved the close relationship that she had with her parents, siblings and nieces and nephews. I particularly liked the way that she shared the Washington Redskins games with her father. It seemed like they called each other after every play. It was like they were watching the game in the same venue. She will be missed.
