Jane Atwell Henkel's Obituary
Jane Atwell Henkel passed away peacefully surrounded by her children, on December 31st, 2023, at the age of 93. She was born in Leesburg, Va and was the only child of Hunton Forest and Rebecca Edmondson Atwell.
After graduating from Averett College, Jane went on to teach elementary school and had many stories to tell of her adventures with her youngsters.
Jane was a lifetime member of Leesburg Presbyterian Church and was married there in 1953 to her dear husband, William C. Henkel. Jane and Bill had 3 children and spent most of their lives in Virginia. In their later years, they spent half the year in Bluffton, SC to be near their daughter and family and half the year in Fredericksburg, Va near their son and family. After Bill passed away, Jane moved to a retirement community closer to her daughter in Savannah, GA.
Jane was known for her kindness to friends and family as well as being a devoted wife and mother. While living at The Marshes in Savannah for her last 16 years, she became a well-known and well-loved resident, always looking out for and helping her friends and fellow residents. She was very active in the community enjoying poetry class, Circle meetings, Bible Study and Scrabble and Bocce.
Jane was predeceased by her son, Chuck Henkel and her husband, Bill.
Jane is survived by her son, William Andrew Henkel (Rebecca), her daughter, Rebecca Terrett, her grandchildren, John Henkel (Franny), Ruth Conner, Stuart H. Terrett (Kate), David Andrew Terrett, Carrie Nelson (Nick), Samuel Henkel (Emily), Henry Henkel and great grandchildren Maia, Jack, Charlie and Hudson.
