Jean Marie Hodge's Obituary
Jean Marie Hodge, age 81, formerly of Venice, Florida, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2012, in Leesburg, Virginia. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis Leonard Hodge, Sr.
Jean was born on March 23, 1931, in Olney, Maryland. She was the daughter of the late James Wallace Burroughs and Mary Burroughs Musgrove. Jean’s identical twin sister, Joan, died in infancy. Jean grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, and was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. Jean was employed by the NSA in the 1950s. She became a homemaker when her children were born. Jean and Lou raised their family in Damascus, Maryland. After raising her family, Jean worked as an underwriter for CRICO auto insurance in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After Lou’s retirement from GEICO, Jean and Lou moved to Venice, Florida, in 1981. Jean was employed by Venice Stationers for several years, leaving her job in 1987 to care for Lou, who had been diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease.
Following Lou’s death in 1990, Jean moved to Virginia to help care for her young grandson, Alex Graf. She returned to her home in Florida in 1998 and helped care for her mother, who died in January 2000. Jean was in poor health for the last year of her life. She moved from Florida back to Virginia in 2011 and resided in Winchester so she could be closer to family. Jean leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Barbara Jean Mercer and her husband, Michael, of Round Hill, Virginia; her son, Louis Leonard Hodge, Jr. and his wife, Marion, of Frederick, Maryland; her sister, Eleanor Elliott, of Venice, Florida; her grandchildren, Rhiannon, Dylan, and Guinevere Hodge, of Frederick, Maryland; and her friend, Cady Cole, of Venice, Florida. Jean was predeceased by her grandson, Alex Graf, in March 2012. Services and interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3701 Pender Drive, Suite 400, Fairfax, Virginia 22030.
